This role involves analyzing written business relative to risk appetite, pricing, coverage, underwriting authority, and compliance with the objective of driving continuous improvement in both underwriting and audit alike. The director will collaborate with Underwriting Shared Services and Underwriting leadership to execute other audit-related projects and mentor less experienced auditors. This position requires in-depth technical knowledge of underwriting theories and practices across all casualty lines of coverage and program structures (Primary, Excess, Guaranteed Cost, Loss Sensitive, etc.), as well as a proven track record of success.JOB DESCRIPTION:Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesPerforms a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:Conducts underwriting audits for assigned business units, analyzing quality in the areas of risk selection, pricing, coverage, internal compliance, and external compliance for both new and renewal businessIdentifies opportunities for operational or training improvement for the underwriting and audit processesCollaborates with Underwriting Shared Services and Underwriting leadership to execute audit-related projects and bring them to successful and timely conclusion, ensuring compliance with project requirements and all governance/control processesDrives quality assurance in all aspects of underwriting by collaborating with Business Unit Leaders and Liaisons throughout the underwriting audit lifecycleDevelops responses and necessary action plans on all audit findings in collaboration with Business Unit LiaisonsEvaluates underwriting guides and processes in collaboration with Compliance/Internal Audit and Global Product Teams to maintain effectiveness and efficiency Participates in the review and implementation of all audit procedures and tools to ensure they remain effectiveCollaborates with Underwriting Shared Services colleagues on workflow improvements and operational efficiency initiatives as neededMentors and trains less experienced auditors, providing technical underwriting and general audit coaching as well as sharing audit management expertiseMay perform additional duties as assigned.Reporting RelationshipTypically reports to an Audit Director or above.Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • In-depth technical knowledge of underwriting theories and practices within the insurance field
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively interact and communicate, in both verbal and written form, with all levels of external and internal business partners within scope of responsibility, team and/or matrix environment
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple audit projects
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to drive results through problem resolution
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software. Experience with Athenium/Team Think preferred
Education & Experience1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designations preferred. 2. Typically, a minimum of ten years underwriting experience with proven track record of results. 4. Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU) preferred.#LI-KC2 #LI-RemoteIn certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $97,000 to $189,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
