About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Accounting Controller with a strong background in the construction industry to oversee financial operations and provide strategic support for our construction-focused clients. Experience with Procore is a must, as you will be leveraging the platform to streamline processes and drive operational efficiency. As the Accounting Controller, you will manage all aspects of financial reporting, compliance, and analysis for construction projects, working closely with clients and internal teams to ensure accurate and timely delivery of results. Key ResponsibilitiesClient-Focused Financial Leadership • Oversee financial operations for construction clients, including budgeting, forecasting, and project cost analysis. • Prepare and present accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports tailored to construction industry standards. • Provide insights and recommendations to clients on cost management, job profitability, and cash flow. Operational Accounting Oversight • Manage all accounting processes, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and job costing. • Ensure compliance with construction-specific accounting standards (e.g., percentage-of-completion, retainage accounting). • Monitor project budgets, track change orders, and oversee lien waiver management. Industry Expertise and Strategic Support • Leverage expertise in construction accounting, including work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, contract management, and overhead allocation. • Analyze financial data to identify trends and risks, supporting client decision-making on project bids, timelines, and resource allocation. • Assist clients with financial modeling for new developments, expansions, and large-scale construction projects. Technology and Systems • Utilize and optimize Procore to manage project financials, budgets, and reporting. • Recommend and implement technology-driven solutions to enhance efficiency and transparency for clients. Team Collaboration and Leadership • Act as the main financial point of contact for construction clients, offering guidance on compliance and best practices. • Partner with Howard Financial’s internal teams to ensure seamless service delivery and client satisfaction. • Mentor junior accountants and team members, fostering growth in construction-specific accounting expertise. Qualifications • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred). • Experience: • 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2-3 years in the construction industry. • Hands-on experience with Procore is required. • Proven ability to manage financial operations for multiple construction projects or portfolios. • Skills: • Deep knowledge of construction accounting principles, including WIP, retainage, and contract billing. • Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial reporting tools. • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. • Ability to manage competing priorities in a client-facing, fast-paced environment.
