Political communications strategist: governance-reform initiative with 90% cross-partisan support

Work from home Full-time role Hiring

We are a small nonpartisan policy-research organization preparing to launch a governance-reform initiative with unusually strong empirical backing. A pre-registered study of 391 Americans found 90.3% support across partisan lines (87.7% of Trump voters, 91.7% of Democrats, 88.6% of Independents). We are looking for a communications strategist who knows the political landscape and can help us do this right. We are not looking for a social media manager or a press release writer. We need someone who understands political communications at a strategic level and who is personally aligned with the goal of making government more honest and accountable. WHAT WE NEED HELP WITH 1. Refining how we present ourselves and the initiative to different audiences: donors, potential legal counsel, coalition partners, media, and the public. 2. Coaching the founder on how to pitch, present, and handle adversarial questions in professional settings. 3. Designing the outreach strategy for engaging PR firms, law firms, funders, and coalition partners. We have research on who the right targets are. We need help approaching them effectively. 4. Building the materials that open doors: overview memo, pitch deck, data summary, FAQ, and talking points. 5. Advising on launch timing, sequencing, and narrative arc for a public campaign planned before the 2026 midterms. 6. Helping us identify and connect with the right people in the democracy-reform, good-government, and civic-engagement ecosystems. ABOUT THE INITIATIVE The initiative establishes a legally enforceable standard of honest governance for public officials, built on fiduciary-duty principles and existing legal precedent. It is implemented through five legal pathways, including state ballot initiatives where available. A structured legal review by per-state counsel is underway to harden the operative text through a web-based review interface. This is not a white paper or a concept. It is a rigorous legal framework and ready-to-execute campaign. We just need an aligned PR professional with the right skills and connections to help us build the coalition quickly. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN A PERSON - Experience in political communications, public affairs, or campaign strategy. Ideally in the democracy-reform, anti-corruption, good-government, or civic-engagement space. - Someone who understands how to position a nonpartisan initiative in a hyper-partisan environment. - A genuine interest in governance reform. This is not a generic communications gig. We need someone who looks at these numbers and the mechanism and thinks "this could actually work." - Comfort working with a founder who is a technologist, not a politician. You would be coaching, not taking orders from a seasoned campaigner. - Strong professional network in the political communications, nonprofit, or reform spaces is a significant plus. - Willingness to start with a scoped engagement (10-20 hours) and expand based on fit and funding. WHAT THIS IS NOT - This is not a social media management role. - This is not content writing or copywriting. - This is not a full-time position (initially). It is a strategic advisory engagement. - This is not partisan campaign work. The initiative is deliberately nonpartisan. ENGAGEMENT STRUCTURE We are looking to start with a scoped pilot engagement of 10-20 hours to: - Review our materials and research - Conduct an initial strategy session - Produce an outreach plan for the first wave of partner/funder/counsel engagement - Begin founder coaching If the fit is right, we expect to expand the engagement as funding grows. We are actively fundraising and expect the communications role to grow significantly as we approach public launch. TO APPLY Please include in your proposal: 1. A brief description of your most relevant experience in political communications, reform campaigns, or public affairs. 2. Your honest reaction to the initiative as described. Does it interest you? What questions would you ask first? 3. One example of a campaign, initiative, or organization you helped position or launch that is analogous to this work. 4. Your availability for an initial 10-20 hour engagement over the next 2-4 weeks. 5. Your hourly rate or proposed flat fee for the pilot scope. Apply To This Job
