Archives 400 Survey Archivist
About the position Responsibilities
- Gather and interpret descriptive data about collections related to Harvard's history.
- Develop a rubric for rating materials and determining inclusion criteria.
- Collect data from Harvard Library's online systems and conduct visits to libraries and archival repositories.
- Interview archivists, curators, and librarians about holdings.
- Evaluate existing metadata for special collections in HOLLIS and other systems.
- Coordinate with curators and archivists to assess descriptive and digitization needs.
- Create and maintain documentation of survey assessment methodology.
- Design a survey assessment database capturing existing metadata and processing estimates.
- Generate reports suitable for distribution beyond the Technical Services for Archives and Special Collections unit.
- Present survey status to the Archives 400 Steering Committee and other stakeholders.
- Recommend high priority collections for processing by the Archives 400 Project Processing Archivist.
- Participate in outreach activities such as guides, presentations, or tours.
- Maintain currency with descriptive standards and practices for archival materials.
Requirements
- Master's degree in library/information science with a concentration in archival studies or equivalent required.
- Minimum of three years of experience working in an archives or special collections setting.
- In-depth understanding of library and archival information systems, including ArchivesSpace.
- Experience with archival descriptive standards, including DACS.
- Experience manipulating metadata in various formats with tools such as spreadsheets or databases.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and coordinate complex projects to meet deadlines. Nice-to-haves
- Experience working with highly sensitive information or confidential records.
- Demonstrated experience working in large-scale archival digitization projects.
- Proven strong and broad historical research and analytical skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, both orally and written.
