Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer to join our Board, Interaction, and Optics Design group. This remote role is pivotal in shaping the mechanical architecture of arenaflex’s next‑generation products, from concept through high‑volume production. You will work hand‑in‑hand with cross‑functional teams—including product design, optics, electrical, and software engineering—to deliver world‑class hardware that meets the highest standards of performance, reliability, and aesthetic excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead End‑to‑End Mechanical Design: Own the full lifecycle of mechanical components, from initial concept sketches to detailed 3D CAD models, prototype fabrication, and production tooling.
- Collaborate Across Disciplines: Partner with product designers, optical engineers, electrical engineers, and software teams to integrate mechanical, optical, and electronic subsystems seamlessly.
- Develop High‑Volume Manufacturing Solutions: Design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) to enable efficient, cost‑effective production at scale.
- Perform Structural and Thermal Analysis: Conduct finite‑element analysis (FEA), thermal simulations, and tolerance stack‑up studies to validate design robustness.
- Drive Innovation in Opto‑Mechanical Design: Create precision camera mounts, kinematic fixtures, and optical alignment mechanisms that meet stringent performance criteria.
- Document and Standardize Processes: Produce detailed drawings, GD&T specifications, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure repeatable quality.
- Lead Prototyping and Testing: Oversee rapid prototyping, bench testing, and validation activities, iterating designs based on data‑driven insights.
- Mentor Junior Designers: Share expertise, provide technical guidance, and foster a culture of continuous learning within the mechanical design team.
- Support Cleanroom and Low‑Contamination Environments: Apply best practices for design and assembly in ISO‑class cleanrooms, ensuring compliance with contamination control standards.
- Contribute to Intellectual Property Strategy: Identify novel design solutions and collaborate with the IP team to protect arenaflex’s innovations.
Essential Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field (Master’s preferred).
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of hands‑on mechanical design experience, with a proven track record in consumer electronics or high‑volume manufacturing.
- CAD Proficiency: Advanced skills in 3D CAD tools such as Siemens NX, SolidWorks, or CATIA; ability to produce detailed models, assemblies, and drawings.
- GD&T Mastery: Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing principles and the ability to apply them effectively.
- Analysis Skills: Demonstrated experience with FEA, tolerance analysis, and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).
- Manufacturing Knowledge: Familiarity with CNC machining, injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, and assembly line processes.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Problem‑Solving: Strong analytical mindset with a data‑driven approach to troubleshooting and optimization.
Preferred Qualifications & Additional Skills
- Experience in opto‑mechanical design, including camera systems, optical mounts, and precision alignment mechanisms.
- Background in hardware development for high‑volume production environments, preferably in consumer tech or medical devices.
- Hands‑on experience designing mechanical structures for PCBs, flex circuits, connectors, and other electronic sub‑assemblies.
- Knowledge of cleanroom design practices and low‑contamination assembly techniques.
- Familiarity with machine vision systems and integration of optical sensors.
- Programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar) for automation of design validation and data analysis.
- Experience with rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printing, CNC milling, and laser cutting.
- Track record of filing patents or contributing to a robust IP portfolio.
Core Skills & Competencies
- Technical Leadership: Ability to drive projects forward, make decisive design choices, and influence cross‑functional teams.
- Collaboration: Strong team player who thrives in a matrixed environment and values diverse perspectives.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to documentation, tolerancing, and quality assurance.
- Innovation Mindset: Curiosity to explore emerging technologies and apply them to real‑world product challenges.
- Time Management: Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and deliver high‑quality results under pressure.
- Adaptability: Comfort with evolving requirements and the agility to pivot when necessary.
