The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Project Delivery Bridge Design Section, is looking for a Technical Engineer/Architect 1/2 Flex to help us Keep Alaska Moving! Depending on the selected applicant's location, this position can be filled in Juneau, Anchorage, or Fairbanks. Salary information is listed below: Anchorage: $3,960.75 - $4,245.00 Biweekly Fairbanks: $4,079.25 - $4,372.50 Biweekly Juneau: $4,158.75 - $4,457.25 Biweekly What you will be doing: As a member of our Bridge Section team, you'll collaborate closely with our Bridge Management Engineer to ensure compliance with federal requirements for bridge inspection, load ratings, commercial vehicle permits, and asset management. As a Technical Engineer, you will become a statewide authority in bridge analysis, load ratings, inspection methodologies, and management strategies. At the Technical Engineer 1 level, you'll work alongside our Bridge Management Engineer to set standards, establish priorities, and resolve challenges in load rating and inspection practices. Progressing to the Technical Engineer 2 level, you will be the foremost expert in bridge analysis, load ratings, inspection techniques, and management protocols across the state. The working environment you can expect: Depending on the selected applicant's location, this position can be filled in Juneau, Anchorage, or Fairbanks. In Juneau, this position is located in the Alaska DOT&PF Headquarters building that is situated adjacent to the Gastineau Channel (Alaska's Inside Passage). This position may include travel within the State (normally two to four trips per year that may last for up to two weeks per trip). Travel may include small plane, boat or ATV. Bridge inspections from under-bridge inspection trucks or lifts may be required. Who we are looking for: To be successful in this position, the selected applicant will possess the following core competencies:

  • Structural Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the design and analysis of complex structures using a variety of materials. Structures may include aerospace systems or structures, and other determinate or indeterminate systems.
  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: Uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one's knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Teaching Others: Helps others learn through formal or informal methods; identifies training needs; provides constructive feedback; coaches others on how to perform tasks; acts as a mentor.
  • Transportation Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods applicable to planning, designing, and constructing of transportation systems including traffic analysis, signal analysis, highway capacity, pavement design, bridge construction, planning of transportation projects, environmental analysis of transportation facilities, and transportation network analysis.
  • Compliance: Knowledge of procedures for assessing, evaluating, and monitoring programs or projects for compliance with Federal laws, regulations, and guidance.

Special Note: This position requires the following:

  • A valid driver's license.
  • Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer with State of Alaska Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors -12 AAC 36.063.

Minimum Qualifications

TECHNICAL ENGINEER 1 / ARCHITECT 1 Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect, and two years of professional engineering or architectural experience as an Engineer 1, Architectural Assistant 3 or higher with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere. Special Note: Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment. TECHNICAL ENGINEER 2 / ARCHITECT 2 Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect, and three years of professional engineering or architectural experience (Engineer/Architect 1 or higher), of which one year was as a Technical Engineer 1 / Architect 1 or Engineer/Architect 2 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere. Special Note: Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
