Canvas Instructional Design Virtual Navigator
Canvas Instructional Design Virtual Navigator Position Summary The Canvas Instructional Design Virtual Navigator supports faculty in navigating the Canvas LMS platform; reviews online courses to ensure alignment with Quality Matters standard; and serves as course developer with a primary focus on course revisions using Articulate Rise 360. The Canvas Instructional Design Virtual Navigator works under the supervision of the Manager of Academic Initiatives and collaborates with members of the Digital Learning Unit as well as Academic and Student Affairs. Essential Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group consultations on effective use of Canvas tools (assignments, discussion boards, pages, quizzes, rubrics, gradebook workflows, etc.) aligned to best practices.
- Guide faculty and how to use syllabi, alignment maps, and course content to evaluate: (1) course overview and introduction; learning objectives; assessment and measurement; instructional materials; learning activities and learning interaction; course technology; learner support; and accessibility and usability.
- Guide faculty in organizing Canvas courses using units/modules, clear sequencing, institutional templates, and alignment with institutional and Quality Matters (QM) standards.
- Coach faculty on practical instructional design improvements that increase clarity, alignment, and engagement.
- Troubleshoot common course setup and instructional design challenges in Canvas.
Course Review
- Conduct course reviews using Quality Matters (QM) and institutional guidelines.
- Review syllabi, alignment maps, and course content to evaluate: (1) course overview and introduction; learning objectives; assessment and measurement; instructional materials; learning activities and learning interaction; course technology; learner support; and accessibility and usability.
- Identify accessibility gaps during course reviews and recommend fixes that are realistic within timelines.
- Produce clear documentation of findings, including prioritized, actionable recommendations.
- Follow up on revisions and track improvement progress with program directors/faculty.
- Perform revisions to master course shells, incorporating Articulate Rise 360 when applicable.
Course Development
- Develop QM-aligned courses in Canvas using Articulate Rise 360 when applicable.
- Use accessibility-ready design practices (clear structure, readable content, heading styles, meaningful links, basic alt text guidance, captioning expectations, etc.).
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Educational Technology, or a related field.
- Mastery of Canvas and Articulate Rise 360.
- Quality Matters Peer Reviewer certification.
- Experience providing individual and group training.
- Experience reviewing online and hybrid courses.
- Strong knowledge of alignment, accessibility, and best practices in online education.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
