As an Online Crisis Chat Text Counselor, you will be part of a dynamic team that is passionate about making a positive impact in our community.

Primary Responsibilities

As an Online Crisis Chat Text Counselor, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Providing crisis intervention to individuals in emotional distress through Crisis Chat and Text
  • Conducting assessments to determine the appropriate means of intervention
  • Completing risk assessments, safety planning, de-escalation, and follow-up with chat visitors
  • Establishing good rapport with a wide range of chat/text visitors
  • Providing crisis intervention counseling to a wide range of chat/text visitors
  • Intervening with suicidal chat/text visitors, including making assessments and taking appropriate action
  • Familiarizing yourself with local and statewide community resources and providing information and referrals to visitors as appropriate
  • Completing thorough documentation for all crisis chat/text in real-time
  • Meeting productivity standards, including completing 1.5 chats/texts per hour
  • Participating in daily ongoing monitoring of chats and texts to ensure quality, with a minimum expectation of 75% on quality evaluations
  • Maintaining a high answer rate, with a minimum of 85% within the first 5 weeks to maintain remote work status
  • Attending weekly supervision and participating in the weekly quality evaluation process
  • Demonstrating the ability to work independently with confidence, as well as work as an integral part of a team of professionals
  • Being mature, empathetic, flexible, and adaptable to varying situations and coverage needs
  • Being reliable and able to adhere to schedules based on call center needs
  • Consistently adhering to call center program policies and procedures
  • Skilled in the use of technology, including telephones, computers, laptops, software, and email
  • Arriving on shift on time and properly attired
  • Assisting in training new Crisis Chat staff
  • Meeting with Crisis Chat Supervisors and Program Manager regularly to discuss program operations, concerns, and potential improvements

Secondary Responsibilities

In addition to your primary responsibilities, you may be required to:

  • Report on-site on an as-needed basis
  • Perform other duties as assigned, required, or needed

Agency-wide Responsibilities

As an Online Crisis Chat Text Counselor, you will also be expected to:

  • Participate in supervision, in-service training, and staff meetings
  • Maintain good working relationships with co-workers and positively contribute to group morale
  • Complete all administrative duties, including time sheets, leave requests, etc., on time
  • Use appropriate channels of communication to resolve conflicts with other staff
  • Interact with staff, clients, and visitors in a professional and courteous manner

Education and Experience

To be considered for this role, you will need to have:

  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school, with a minimum of 120 college credits
  • A Master's Degree from an accredited school, with a minimum of 30 graduate school credits (preferred)
  • 1 year of experience in mental health services, preferably in crisis intervention services, suicide prevention, and intervention
  • Computer skills with various software, including Microsoft Products, proficient skills required

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to function successfully in an environment requiring immediate response to urgent situations
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with local and statewide community resources
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Computer skills with various software and the internet

Work Conditions

As an Online Crisis Chat Text Counselor, you can expect to:

  • Share office space with Crisis Chat Counselors
  • Work flexible hours, including holidays and evenings, depending on scheduled shifts
  • Be required to lift 25lbs
  • Participate in on-site training in Columbia, Maryland, for the first 6 weeks of onboarding
