Southeast U.S. (Field-Based) | Full-Time | $60,000 - $80,000 + Discretionary Bonuses

About the Role

The oldest and largest independent, employee-owned publishing house in the United States is hiring a Sales and Market Development Specialist to join its College Marketing team, covering the social sciences across roughly a quarter of the country in the Southeast. The company's college division produces textbooks and digital courseware for undergraduate studies across the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. This role blends field sales, market development, and sales training. The specialist will travel to campuses to train and strategize with College Sales Representatives, work directly with faculty to win new textbook and digital courseware adoptions, and serve as a content expert for assigned social science disciplines. The role also involves significant Salesforce pipeline management, prepublication research and selling, messaging feedback to editors, and creating sales tools that support the broader field team. About 30% travel is required, with more during peak adoption periods. A strong fit for an enthusiastic, competitive salesperson who loves books and educational products, has strong presentation skills, and enjoys the combination of strategic selling, coaching colleagues, and building faculty relationships. What the Role Covers

  • Visiting campuses to train sales representatives on selling within social science disciplines (approximately 30% travel)
  • Working to win new business and increase market share across front list titles and important second- and third-year titles
  • Increasing activation and assignment rates for digital media tools

  • Responding to Salesforce Action Plans with strategic and content-focused guidance, and driving Salesforce activity from the field
  • Monitoring and analyzing the Salesforce pipeline, collaborating with marketing managers and specialists on strategies to improve pipeline movement
  • Preparing and conducting on-campus and virtual presentations to faculty
  • Investigating new course markets, conducting prepublication selling and research, and providing messaging feedback on first editions and key revisions
  • Creating and co-owning target lists for prepublication and front list titles
  • Participating in regular calls and meetings with marketing managers, specialists, and editors to analyze messaging, sales results, and pipeline progress
  • Managing the January sales conference presentation, including outline, materials, and logistics
  • Creating sales tools to support marketing to college instructors and training for sales representatives
  • Participating in new sales representative training programs

Qualifications

  • 3 years of successful sales experience required; 3 years in higher education publishing sales preferred
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills

  • Strong ability to support newer reps on campus while collaborating with experienced reps
  • Highly disciplined, self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented
  • Creative, solutions-focused problem solver
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize across projects and adoption cycles throughout the academic year
  • Willingness to travel approximately 30%, with more during peak periods
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
