Senior Curator - Modern Art & Contemporary Collections
Our client, a world-renowned art institution located in Boston, Massachusetts, US , is seeking a distinguished Senior Curator to oversee and develop its esteemed collection of modern and contemporary art. This leadership position requires a deep scholarly understanding of 20th and 21st-century art movements, a proven ability to conceptualize and execute groundbreaking exhibitions, and a commitment to engaging diverse audiences. The successful candidate will be responsible for acquisitions, collection care, research, exhibition planning, and public programming, playing a vital role in shaping the institution's artistic direction and scholarly output. Key Responsibilities: Lead the strategic development, interpretation, and presentation of the museum's modern and contemporary art collection. Research, propose, and organize major international loan exhibitions and collection-based exhibitions. Oversee all aspects of exhibition development, including conceptualization, research, catalogue production, and installation. Identify and pursue significant acquisitions through purchase, gift, and bequest, building upon existing strengths and addressing collection gaps. Conduct scholarly research on the collection, publishing articles, essays, and potentially authoring books. Engage with collectors, patrons, and foundations to foster support for the department and the museum. Develop and manage the departmental budget, ensuring responsible stewardship of resources. Supervise and mentor curatorial staff, fellows, and interns, fostering a collaborative and productive working environment. Represent the museum at symposia, conferences, and public lectures, both nationally and internationally. Collaborate with other museum departments, including education, conservation, registration, and marketing, to enhance the visitor experience and institutional goals. Advocate for the collection and its significance within the broader context of art history. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Art History with a specialization in modern and/or contemporary art. A minimum of 7 years of curatorial experience in a reputable art museum or institution, with a demonstrated track record of organizing significant exhibitions. Extensive knowledge of art historical scholarship, critical theory, and the international art market. Demonstrated success in building and managing significant art collections, including acquisitions. Excellent scholarly research and writing skills, with a record of publication. Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and stakeholders. Proven leadership and management capabilities. Proficiency in relevant languages (e.g., French, German) is a plus. Experience working with museum databases and digital collection management systems.
