Tax Reviewer (CPA or EA) - Fully Remote
Job Description (paste this into the Indeed description box) Tax Reviewer (CPA or EA) | Fully Remote | $35 to $45 per Hour Cornerstone CPA is a growing multi location accounting firm headquartered in Washington State. We serve individuals and small businesses with tax preparation, bookkeeping, payroll, and advisory services. We are hiring our next tax reviewer to join a four person tax team that is growing roughly 50 percent year over year. Total compensation includes hourly pay plus health insurance after 90 days, paid time off, license renewal coverage, and CPE support.
About the Role
You will be the final set of eyes on most of the individual and small business returns that leave our firm under your name. The work is primarily 1040 review, with a meaningful share of S corp and partnership returns where the same client also has a personal return. Our team works in a three person flow on every return:
- Admin handles intake, document collection, and most client communication
- Preparer enters data and builds the return
- Reviewer (this role) reviews, signs, and records a short 3 to 6 minute screen share video walking the client through the result
Every return goes out with a Calendly link so clients who have questions can book time directly with you. Most don't. The video answers the question before it gets asked. Schedule and Capacity
- 30 to 40 hours per week off season with a somewhat flexible schedule
- Overtime expected during tax season (late January through mid April)
- Saturdays are part of the rhythm during tax season
- Capacity to review 20 to 30 returns per week off season and up to 40 per week in season
- In year one, actual review volume runs below capacity. The balance of your time supports tax planning engagements, IRS notice work, and process improvement
What You Will Do
- Review individual and small business tax returns for accuracy, compliance, and planning opportunities
- Sign and release completed returns
- Record short screen share videos walking each client through their return
- Take Calendly bookings from clients who want live conversations
- Coach and give feedback to preparers
- Lead tax planning engagements during the off season
- Contribute to our responsible adoption of AI tools that speed up the workflow without compromising accuracy
Qualifications
- Active CPA or EA license in good standing (required)
- Demonstrated experience reviewing or signing several hundred 1040s per season
- Strong attention to detail and sound professional judgment
- Comfort working in a remote, paperless environment
- Experience with CCH Axcess Tax is a plus but not required (we will train)
- This role does not offer visa sponsorship
We weigh number of returns reviewed far more heavily than years of experience.
Compensation and Benefits
- $35 to $45 per hour based on credentials, return volume history, and review judgment
- W2 position
- Health insurance available after 90 days
- PTO accrual at 1 hour per 26 hours worked
- CPA or EA license renewal covered by firm
- CPE covered with approval, within reason
- Fully remote, open to candidates in any U.S. state
Why This Role
- Variety in the work, with review as the core and real off season space for planning engagements and client advisory work
- A growth path that scales as the firm grows
- A team that meets often and treats professional development as part of the job
- A leadership team that embraces AI as a productivity tool while owning 100 percent of every outcome
