Software Engineer (R&D)

We are seeking a R&D Software Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team which spans mechanical, electrical, materials, robotics, AI, and software engineering. You’ll work across domains, solve problems with code, and contribute to a fast-moving team that values creativity, pragmatism, and impact over convention.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build custom tools and integrations that accelerate development and experimentation.
  • Improve and extend our AI coding assistant to boost team productivity.
  • Automate repetitive tasks and workflows across engineering and operations.
  • Contribute to health dashboards, testing infrastructure, and data pipelines.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to solve open-ended problems with code.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong programming fundamentals and a track record of building something impressive.
  • Ability to get things done independently, without extensive guidance.
  • Comfortable working across unfamiliar domains and technology stacks.
  • Writes simple, readable, and maintainable code.
  • Excited about using AI tools to move faster and smarter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with LLMs, developer tooling, or automation frameworks.
  • Exposure to robotics, distributed systems, or sensor data.
  • Background in software engineering, but with a flexible, cross-functional mindset.
  • Interest in sustainability, construction, or experimental R&D environments.

Location & Travel

  • Remote work opportunity; or, work in-office at the Terran Robotics Lab in Bloomington, Indiana.
  • If remote, expect to travel to and work up to five days per month at the Terran Robotics Lab in Bloomington, Indiana, 45 minutes from Indianapolis.

Compensation

  • Salary Range: $70,000 – $110,000/year commensurate with experience, qualifications and location
  • Equity: Participation in the Company’s Equity Incentive Plan
  • Employee Benefits & Vacation per Company policies
