Job Summary and Key Responsibilities

The Horticulture Vegetable and Small Fruit Extension Educator will be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs that address the needs and opportunities of commercial vegetable and small fruit growers. The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Providing leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs that promote best management practices, new varieties, food safety compliance, and integrated pest management.
  • Collaborating with producers, industry partners, and stakeholders to identify needs and opportunities, and to develop targeted educational programs and resources.
  • Utilizing a variety of educational methods, including direct teaching, group experiences, mass media, newsletters, electronic technology, and distance learning, to deliver programs and resources to diverse audiences.
  • Conducting one-on-one consultations with key producers and industry partners to provide expert advice and support.
  • Managing day-to-day program operations, including fiscal accountability, reporting, and routine operations.
  • Pursuing new and additional funding sources to enhance and extend program opportunities.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities to enhance personal skills and knowledge, and to stay current with industry trends and research.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

To be successful in this role, the candidate will possess:

  • A Master's degree or higher in Horticulture, Entomology, Plant Pathology, or a closely related field, plus 2 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse audiences, including producers, industry partners, and stakeholders.
  • Proven organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to define, conduct, and interpret applied research and demonstration projects.
  • Successful experience in obtaining new funding, including grants and industry support.
  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and partners.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare and deliver educational programs, reports, and other materials.
  • Fundamental competence in utilizing current technology, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other software applications.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

Preference will be given to candidates who possess:

  • A concentration in Horticulture, Entomology, Plant Pathology, or a closely related field.
  • Two to five years of relevant experience in horticultural crop production, with knowledge and/or experience in commercial vegetable and small fruit production.
  • Experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation, with a focus on educational programs and resources for commercial growers and producers.
  • Strong networking and partnership-building skills, with the ability to establish and maintain relationships with industry partners, stakeholders, and other organizations.
