Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Academic Writing Tutor to join our team at the UMA Writing Center. As an Academic Writing Tutor, you will play a vital role in fostering a community of writers, providing individualized support to students, and helping them develop their writing skills. This is a part-time, temporary position that offers a flexible, hybrid remote arrangement, allowing you to work from the comfort of your own home and balance your professional and personal life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide feedback to students by asking questions and sharing resources to help them improve their writing skills
  • Act as a 'practice audience' for writers on various projects, such as essays, lab reports, resumes, proposals, and creative writing
  • Lead discussions on writing processes and challenges in one-to-one, small group, and workshop settings in the writing center, classrooms, and online
  • Refer students to other resources when appropriate, such as campus librarians
  • Assist classrooms with writing tutor support as needed
  • Work with small groups or individuals on a regular basis during assigned hours, in-person or online
  • Maintain student confidentiality and adhere to university policies and procedures
  • Attend monthly meetings and participate in ongoing tutor education, faculty mentorship, and opportunities to engage with the broader field of writing studies

Qualifications and Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following qualifications and skills:

Essential Qualifications

  • Previous writing tutor or comparable work experience
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to communicate effectively using oral, written, and electronic methods, while maintaining confidentiality
  • Proficiency with computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, as well as Gmail and other software and various websites

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to prioritize and manage work
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in an autonomous work environment as well as work effectively as part of a team

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and with varying levels of writing proficiency
