The kitchen is the heart of the restaurant, and the Toast KDS (Kitchen Display System) keeps it running smoothly when the pace of service heats up. Restaurants install KDS tablets at prep stations across the kitchen so everyone has a real-time picture of which dishes to prepare to keep service flowing. Kitchen operations are directly integrated with online ordering services so restaurants can jump on new orders and adapt to changes in demand. KDS data powers adaptive AI predictions that let guests know how long it will take to prepare their meal. Guests and waitstaff are automatically notified via SMS or POS when a meal leaves the kitchen. With the KDS, kitchens run efficiently with clear communication, minimal mistakes, high throughput, and quick delivery of fresh food to guests.

Toast is looking for a Senior Android Software Engineer to join our Kitchen Operations team, building the next generation of KDS with an eye toward modularity, configurability, and ease of use. You’ll get rapid feedback from Toast’s largest customers while developing with quality at every step.

About this roll* (Responsibilities)

• Design, build, deploy, and maintain highly resilient and scalable features for Toast’s Kitchen Display System
• Lead complex projects that improve functionality and reliability for our customers
• Partner with a wide array of teams across Toast
• Taking ownership of the Android system
• Ensure quality by building automated testing for changes
• Roll* features out to customers, including monitoring for success
• Collaborate with UX and PM on the definition and design of features
• Mentor and coach other engineers

Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

• 5+ years experience in Android development
• Extensive experience working with an Object Oriented Language like Java or Kotlin, with a deep understanding of testing, quality, and best practices
• Experience shipping production services and balancing getting things done with platform stability and reliability
• Focused on delivering positive impact for Toast customers
• Enjoys working in a team environment with a shared code-base
• Excellent cross-team communication skills on complex technical topics

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions, if eligible), benefits, and equity (if eligible).
