About the Role: Learning Commons Specialist - Science

As a Learning Commons Specialist - Science at TCC, you will play a pivotal role in providing learning assistance and tutoring support to students across various science disciplines. You will work closely with faculty members to develop programs, resources, and materials that enhance student learning outcomes. Your expertise in science education and learning assistance will be invaluable in helping students achieve their academic goals.

Key Responsibilities:

• Instructing and Providing Learning Assistance: Offer individualized and group tutoring support to students in science subjects, including biology, chemistry, physics, and related disciplines.
• Program Development: Collaborate with faculty members across divisions to design and implement programs, resources, and projects that promote student success in science education.
• Class Visits and Orientations: Conduct class visits, orientations, and tours for students and other groups to promote the Learning Commons and its resources.
• Tutor Training and Mentorship: Participate in the training and mentorship of part-time tutors, ensuring they are equipped to provide high-quality support to students.
• Academic Support Services: Provide targeted academic support services to specific student populations, such as veterans, STEM students, online students, dual enrollment students, and athletes.
• Record-Keeping and Reporting: Utilize online student record-keeping systems to track student progress and evaluate the effectiveness of learning assistance programs.

Requirements and Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree: A bachelor's degree in a science discipline, including but not limited to chemistry, physics, biology, or a related field from an accredited institution.
• Experience: Two years of experience in learning assistance and/or teaching, preferably in a higher education setting.
• Science Knowledge: Strong knowledge of biological skills and concepts, including general biology, biology for majors, and anatomy and physiology.
• Mathematics Skills: Basic math skills through college algebra.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's Degree: A master's degree in a science discipline or related field.
• Teaching Experience: Experience teaching or instructing in a science discipline.
• Online Tutoring Experience: Experience with online tutoring platforms and tools.

Skills and Competencies:

• Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with students, faculty, and staff.
• Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in word processing programs, online student record-keeping systems, and computer-assisted learning programs.
• Assessment and Evaluation: Ability to assess student learning needs and develop individualized learning plans.
• Instructional Design: Skill in designing effective instructional materials and presentations.
